Description

About Black Tourmaline
Name Origin
The name lapis lazuli combines the Latin word lapis (stone) with the Persian lāzhward (referring to Badakhshan in Afghanistan), meaning the stone from Lazhward. Its deep blue hue speckled with pyrite evokes the image of a starry night sky. During the medieval period, it was ground into ultramarine pigment for Renaissance frescoes.
Legends
In ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, lapis lazuli symbolized divine power (such as in the pharaohs' scarabs) and was used to treat illnesses; in Buddhism, it is one of the Seven Treasures, representing the Medicine Buddha. Chinese emperors used it in ceremonies for worshipping heaven due to its sky-like color. Modern spirituality associates it with self-awareness, although this is not supported by historical texts.
